Football is back, which means fall is coming

Hi Reader,

Football is back.

You know what that means. Fall is on the way. The light goes gold a little earlier, the mornings start asking for a hoodie, and the food on the table gets heavier and better.

Football season is personal in this house. Let me tell you why.

I graduated from Auburn University (WAR EAGLE) for undergrad and pharmacy school. While there I met my husband and somewhere in the middle of pharmacy school, my husband got drafted by the Green Bay Packers. So there I was, learning to counsel patients on drug interactions, and also learning what four winters in Green Bay do to a Southern girl. We were there four years including the year we won the Super Bowl.

After Green Bay came the (Oakland) Raiders. Then the Detroit Lions. Then he retired, and we made Florida our home.

So when I say we love football season, I mean we will find a reason to cheer for almost anybody. The only line we hold is Alabama because and Auburn family could NEVER!

And every fall, the season turning makes me want to feed everybody. Big pots. Real sides. The kind of dinner that fogs up the kitchen window. So while the games are on, here is what is on our table this week. Take it, change it, steal the parts that sound good.

Sunday: fried chicken, mac and cheese, candied yams, brussell sprouts

Monday: easy baked chicken, cabbage, rice, potatoes

Tuesday: traditional beef tacos

Wednesday: BBQ chicken, yellow rice, sweet potatoes, mixed veggies

Thursday: turkey sausage rigatoni, garlic bread, green peas

Friday: pizza

Saturday: open, on purpose

That last one is not laziness. Not every night has to be planned. Some nights the plan is that there is no plan, and in this season especially, that is allowed too.

If you make one of these, hit reply and tell me how it went. And tell me who you cheer for, and what fall is putting on your table.

Before the menu, a question I actually want you to answer. Wednesday, over on the Substack, I start a series I have been holding onto: 5 Hills I Would Die On as a Black Mom Raising Black Children in the Suburbs. But before I tell you mine, I want to hear yours. What is one hill you would die on raising your children? The thing you will not bend on, no matter who it makes uncomfortable. Hit reply and tell me one. Now. Let's talk about dinner. This week's menu: Monday: Marry Me Salmon Linguini...

Hey Reader, Before the menu, I want to stop and say thank you. This has been a season of firsts for me, and you showed up for every one of them. You read the blog. You've come with me to Substack as I build something new there. And when my piece went up on HuffPost, you shared it, you carried it, you handed it to people who needed to see it. I don't take a single one of you for granted. None of this works without the people who actually show up, and you did. You do. So from a very full heart,...

I have something to celebrate, and something to be honest with you about, because you are the people I don't perform for. My piece is live on HuffPost. After everything, after turning down the first opportunity to protect my son, this is the one that ran. I am proud of it. But can I be honest with you? When I started, I was writing for HuffPost Personal. Somewhere along the way I was handed to a different editor, and I didn't find out until it published that my words had landed in Black...
